about
This song is about death. I read an article at one time in which the author stated many older women had watched their mothers 'travel down that path' referring to death.
I don't know a lot about death, being young and rather sheltered. I do know that it is one thing you face alone, even if you have your family gathered around you.
For me, to talk about death, to be aware of the impending walk off the precipice of the unknown which awaits all of us, is comforting. In talking about it I recognize that it is a thing that happens regardless of what we say, not a fickle demon whose name we fear to utter because we may draw its attention to us.
lyrics
Some of us are born to battle
Some with hearts a-weeping
Some of us, born in a bottle
Spend our whole lives sleeping
You watched her go down that dark tunnel
Where no one can tell
You were there but you could not save her
That was just as well
Oh, that was just as well my love
That was just as well
Some of us are born to fight
And some are born to lose
Some of us are born to service
Some live as they choose
I'll watch them all cross o'er that river
Where no one can tell
Despite my tears, I will not save them
That is just as well
Oh, that is just as well my love
That is just as well
Some of us are born to right
And some are born to wrong
Some of us know which is which
And some of us sing songs
I'll walk into that path of darkness
Onward, down to hell
No one will be there to save me
That is just as well
Oh, that is just as well my love
That is just as well
